Who We Are

WRS Bioproducts is an Australian natural ingredients company developing commercial natural beta-carotene production from Dunaliella salina. The production platform combines hypersaline ponds, abundant sunlight and modern downstream processing to supply reliable, audit-ready ingredients at industrial scale.

Proven heritage

WRS is led by the founders of Betatene, who established the Whyalla operation and subsequently developed Hutt Lagoon into the world’s largest natural beta-carotene production operation. These operations were acquired by Henkel and later became part of BASF’s global carotenoids business.

Current position

WRS is building a globally scalable platform for natural beta-carotene production and is now entering an active commercial phase. The first-stage facility in Karratha, Western Australia is intended to establish steady-state operations, qualify product with customers and generate commercial revenue.

The business has been structured with long-term scale in mind, including staged expansion, capital efficiency and future public-market relevance as the company grows.

Why natural source matters

Market shift

Regulators, retailers and consumers are steadily moving away from synthetic colours and artificial additives. Natural origin, transparency and ESG performance are increasingly important in procurement and brand positioning.

Why beta-carotene matters

Beta-carotene is commercially valuable because it works as both a precursor of vitamin A and a versatile colourant and antioxidant. This makes source selection important for both commercial positioning and regulatory considerations.

Limits of conventional sources

Synthetic beta-carotene is linked to petrochemical pathways that increasingly sit at odds with natural-origin expectations. Fermentation-derived beta-carotene can also carry a weaker naturally sourced story where intensive inputs are required.

Why algae-derived stands out

Dunaliella salina provides a plant-based, non-GMO, naturally derived source of beta-carotene as mixed carotenoids.  Cultivation in hypersaline ponds using sunlight and saline water supports clean-label and natural-origin.
