Resource-efficient by design
WRS’s cultivation system has structural environmental advantages. Dunaliella salina is grown on non-arable land in hypersaline rather than potable water. Sunlight supplies the energy required for photosynthesis, while dissolved inorganic carbon provides an essential input to algal growth.
The environmental performance of the complete operation will also depend on power sources, biomass recovery, downstream processing, transport and water management. WRS intends to measure and document its performance as commercial operating data become available and to make sustainability claims only where they can be supported.
Karratha’s high levels of solar irradiance may allow WRS to incorporate solar generation progressively. WRS also intends to assess whether suitable by-product streams from surrounding industry could be used as cultivation inputs, subject to technical testing, regulatory requirements, reliable availability and acceptable commercial arrangements.
